Selection process for Mana Whenua members of the Independent Māori Statutory Board (IMSB)

The following criteria guides the selection process. These criteria need to be found across the IMSB as a whole, it is not necessary for any individual IMSB member to meet all criteria. The criteria are:

  • Knowledge and expertise in te reo, tikanga, mātauranga.
  • Knowledge of the geographic and socio-political makeup of the whole of Tāmaki Makaurau area.
  • Knowledge and expertise in areas relevant to local government (for example, resource management, public policy, planning, transport, finance, etc);
  • Strong networks and established relationships within mana whenua and local and central government spheres.
  • Acknowledged as leaders within their own community.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must meet the following eligibility criteria.

Candidates must:

  • be a natural person.
  • consent to being appointed to the board.

Further to this, candidates must not be:

  • under 18 years of age.
  • an undischarged bankrupt.
  • prohibited from being a director or promoter of, or being concerned or taking part in the management of, an incorporated or unincorporated body under the Companies Act 1993, or the Financial Markets Conduct Act 2013, or the Takeovers Act 1993
  • subject to a property order under the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act 1988
  • a person in respect of whom a personal order has been made under that Act that reflects adversely on the person's:
    • competence to manage his or her own affairs in relation to his or her property, or
    • capacity to make or to communicate decisions relating to any particular aspect or aspects of his or her personal care and welfare.
  • a person who has been convicted of an offence punishable by imprisonment for a term of 2 years or more, or who has been sentenced to imprisonment for any other offence.
  • a current member of Parliament.
  • a current Auckland councillor or current local board member.
  • a person who is disqualified under another Act.

Confirmation process

Successful and unsuccessful candidates will be advised by 25 October 2022. IMSB members for the 2022-2025 term will be announced on this website after that date.
